Our one day off of this week was Tuesday the 26th and Richard wanted to go somewhere away from the campground…So we’ve been wanted to go to Walt Disney’s hometown of about 5 years, Marceline, MO…Marceline is about 92 miles west of Monroe City…Follow Route 36 west to Route 5 south and make a right on Kansas Street…Kansas Street turns in to Main Street USA…At the corner of Broadway & Route 5 is a red house that has been renovated and added on to…The left side of the house section is where Walt lived with his parents…
Our first stop was Walt’s Museum…No photographs allowed except for one spot in the museum…Our tour guide was a very nice little old lady who volunteers her time to the museum…She told us a lot about Walt and his family, about the Dreaming Tree and his barn, how Walt came up with the idea of Disneyland and how he liked to draw but if it wasn’t for his uncle sending him pencils and paper he wouldn’t have drawn his dreams…Inside the museum was the little gift shop…We had to buy something from here as a keepsake…I found 2 different lanyard pins, one for me and one for my sweetie…We also picked one up for our good friends, Bob & Donna who are big Disney fans…I also got for the kitchen a Mickey Mouse head hot plate…
After the museum, we wanted to walk down Main Street…Our first stop was food…Ma Vic’s Corner Cafe…First time here and we got a corner booth…A jumbo porkloin sandwich for Richard and a Turkey Club for me…and PEPSI…We are in Pepsi country…Only a few places serve Coke and Hardee’s is one of the places…A great lunch and onward we go…We were told to go to the Ice Cream Shop on Main Street before we leave too…As were walking Main Street taking our photos, everyone would stop and talk and ask us if we went to the ice cream shop…We said No,Not Yet and they told us to make sure we went there…
Richard and I were snapping pictures of the signs along the walls of the buildings…We went in to several shops and finally hit the Sweet Tunes Ice Cream Shop…I took some pictures of the old clock on the wall, curved bench chair, old time stools & table and all the available ice cream flavors…Richard got Butterfinger & Coconut waffle cone while I got the Andes Mint waffle cone…I think Richard enjoyed his cause he was done way before I finished mine…
More walking around and more picture taking…As we were walking I said to Richard that I couldn’t believe that there wasn’t a shop that didn’t sell yard flags…We came upon the Busy Bee shop…Inside the shop were flowers and stuffed animals and all kinds of signs for the yard…Lo and behold, I found flags…I looked through the flags for the appliqued flags cause they last longer…I found 2 applique flags and 1 linen flag for our yard…The owner of the Busy Bee and Richard talked and was very interested in where we were from and what we were doing there in Marceline…She told us to come back and make sure we stop by and chat with her again…She said we were “fun” folks…lol
During our walk, we came across a small park…In the park was a big black locomotive that is huge…On the other side of the park is a red caboose…We had a blast just taking pictures of big locomotive and the huge wheels and the name on the side of locomotive and when it was dedicated…The red caboose wasn’t open but both of us got on one of the ends of the train and took pics…Lots of fun…
Marceline, MO was a very quaint little town that was awesome to see and hear how Walt Disney came up with the theme park of Disneyland…To see a huge cottonwood that has been struck by lightning many times and is falling apart is sad but it was great to see a new cottonwood tree growing from a seedling from the old tree…It was cool to be able to write our names in the barn that was rebuilt in the exact place where Walt’s barn was where he did most of his day dreamings and drawings…Most people wouldn’t think that would be much to do but if you are a Disney fan or fanatic, this is a great little town to visit if you are in the area…I’m glad we did a day trip there…
